Lelouch Lamperouge is the protagonist of the series, yet is often easily seen as equally antagonistic at times. At the beginning of the series, Lelouch seems to be an ordinary (albeit a very intelligent) student at Ashford Academy. He is also a member of the student council. However, that very normal exstistance is shattered when one fateful day Lelouch has a run in with a group of terrorists. Through these odd circumstances he meets a mysterious young woman known simply as C.C. (pronounced as See-Two). Faced with armed, merciless soldiers whose orders are to wipe out the entire area population, Lelouch very nearly meets his end. Before the bullet can find it's mark, C.C. stands to take the bullet for him. She falls to his feet with a bullet hole in her head and by all appearances dead. It is then that he is offered a power that will not only save him, but change the very course of his future and that of Britannia. Without hestitation, he accepts. With his right eye glowing crimson, he orders the soldiers standing before to die. The soldiers all change the aim of their guns to their own heads and fire, killing themselves right before Lelouch's eyes. For a moment, Lelouch is surprised, but that disappears within moments. A maliciously exuberant grin spreads over his lips. His chance had finally arrived.
The power he received is known as Geass or the Power of the King which enambles Lelouch to look anyone in the eye, give them an order, and they are forced to obey without question. There are limitations to this power, of course. Lelouch must have direct eye contact and may only use his geass on someone once, using it again proves inaffective. For a full explaination of geass and all it's limitations, visit the Code Geass Wiki.
After receiving his power and testing it's capabilites, Lelouch takes steps to make his ambitions become a reality. Lelouch takes on the guise of Zero, a mysterious masked individual whose goal is to bring down Britannia. Zero takes over the reigns of the very terrorists that brought him to C.C. in the first place, transforming them into his personal soldiers of justice, the Order of the Black Knights.
Beyond the seemingly normal student and the authoritative Zero lies an even deeper secret very few know of. Lelouch was actually born to the royal family he is trying to destroy. His birth name is Lelouch vie Britannia, the eleventh prince and seventeenth in line of sucession to the throne of Britannia. Sadly, at the tender age of ten, Lelouch witnessed the horrific murder of his mother and saw his beloved younger sister Nunnally crippled, all the while his father remained discompassionate and unconcerned. Outraged, Lelouch confronts his father and questions him on the matter only to have his royal status stripped from him. To further his father's blow, Lelouch and Nunnally both were banished to Japan where they were used as political hostages in the house of the Japan's prime minister Kururugi Genbu. It was during their stay that Lelouch met and after some initial disputes befriended Kururugi Suzaku, a friendship that continues to the present timeline and goes to play an important roles in Lelouch's (as well as the plots) development.
After the Britannia take over of Japan (renamed Area 11), Lelouch and his sister are thought to be dead, but were secretly taken in by the Ashfords, the wealthy family who owns Ashford Acedemy, where both Lelouch and Nunnally attend school and live.
Lelouch is a very complicated young man who wants nothing more than to create a peaceful world for his sister to live in. But though his intentions are pure enough, he does not think twice about getting his hands dirty in the process, which leaves it's mark more and more over his character as the series progresses. Not to say he does not regret his actions, as in several instances he has, which shows that he is still human even if his actions prove otherwise.
